The most important aspect in ensuring long term lighter performance is using a quality butane.  Lower quality brands filter the gas less and therefore remove less of the impurities present.  This can clog up a lighter over time.

The tip is the standard for the majority of modern lighters.  Though some older lighters may use a different tip.  There is a selection of these different shaped tips in the cap.

When filling a lighter it is important to first bleed out any air by pressing on the metal nib where you fill it, typically located on the bottom of the lighter, to release anything inside.  Then fill your lighter, always pointing the red tip of the can towards the ground, to ensure no air is mixed in while the fuel transfers.
